It might also be a good 1st step, to have a friend pose as a potentional employer and call your references. Just because they told you they would give you a reference - it might not be the glowing one you thought it would be. It's better to know this information before a "real" employer calls!

Liz makes an interesting point, however I find her suggestion a bit too easy to fabricate, and from my perspective I think the endorsements are better left on LinkedIn.

The trouble with recommending longer hair on women, or growing facial hair on men, is that those things take TIME. It's very difficult to grow out a short haircut without going through an awkward stage, and no one wants to put off their job search for even a week just to get a good start on a beard. I'll guarantee you that no matter how much older I supposedly look with a short haircut, I will look far less polished and sure of myself with it half grown out. Plus, I LOVE my hair short. Getting it cut makes me feel great, and having it look as though it needed a cut makes me feel dowdy and incomplete. I am sure that comes through when I interview.

This is so true. I recently told the very same thing to someone who had been laid off and who was a bit panicked about her ability to get a new job. She had been with he company for 19 years. Can you believe it, she argued with me, said she would get too much spam if she turned off her earthlink spam filter! Was not interests in a free gmail (etc) account either- we truely can be our own worst enemies!

I was a casualty of a company going belly up. It was run by 20 and unders, which I always had concerns about, since they had never seen lean times. I am over 50 and have been looking for over 4 months. I cannot tell you how often I meet with a Director that might be 35. I already know I am out of the running since they want a fraternity type environment. So many companies have young executives that have not been through enough business and economic cycles to understand how to navigate through them. They are used to booming times. I disagree that the older employee earns more, I have supported HR and see the 30 somethings salary and bonus structure. I know they are protecting their turf, and have come into a lifestyle that tool me longer to achieve.

Love your blog! So many people TALK about writing, or running down their dreams. It's great to see you DOING it!

Maybe I should try something like this for grants? Do you think a blog on the art of finding and writing grants would hold any water when I finish my PhD and am trying for a faculty position?

This is excellent advice - one of the most important things to remember is to be persistent without appearing desperate. You've laid out a great set of guidelines to follow.

While I agree with the statement "job hunters that haven’t had any luck may need to buckle down and do some time consuming, tedious research..." my biggest hurdle has battling with the lack of coommunication & professionalism done by my fellow HR & Recruiting Professionals.

Worked in this field for 15 yrs, 10 of which have been as a Consultant/Contractor. This go 'round seems a lot tougher than in 2001. Have been on the 'hunt' for 6 months now and my experience has been horrifying...

Received initial emails for information & screens from other recruiters - then hear nothing (no emails or calls -- rest assured I'm trying to connect with these persons to get an outcome...) Have conducted several screens - also never heard back yes/no/or indifferent. Have EVEN INTERVIEWED in person - and had to chase down the outcome...

Didn't think it was going to be easy this time around, but with this kind of treatment & interviewing process, am SHOCKED .
Food for thought...
